Hey tumblr community! I have created this blog to immerse myself in the world of communications, media studies, and mass media. There is so much to learn about my major and college of choice, and I am eager to soak it all in!Always learning something! Abbey

In honor of Tumblr Tuesday, I’m going to make an effort to recommend 3 blogs every Tuesday and let you know why I like them!
abbeydufoe: My homegirl Abbey just started this blog in order learn more about social media and communications. Based on what I know about Ms. Dufoe, this is bound to be a great blog!
mothernaturenetwork: An amazing science-based news source!
letsbethechange: 19 year-old Laura started this tumblr to raise awareness of various global issues, non-profits, and what YOU can do to help change the world!

Zambia, 2010: Two-year-old Bright smiles at his aunt and primary caretaker Leontina in Mulebambushi Village. Bright acquired HIV in utero, and his mother, Yvonne, died of an AIDS-related illness last year. Services to prevent the mother-to-child transmission of HIV are now available in their district, and Bright is receiving life-saving antiretroviral medicines.

As heart-wrenching as the work is, I’m so in love with the idea of working for a non-profit. I wish more of them would get on tumblr!

An ongoing list of charities, etc. on tumblr

I hope that more charities will be joining tumblr’s ranks, so in an effort to raise awareness of different organizations and their missions, I’m creating a list of these groups & their tumblr presence!

That’s all I could find… I would love to see more charities flock to tumblr (charity: water, water.org, Three Avocados, Courtney’s House, One Day’s Wages, etc.). If you have any to add to the list, please comment below!

Keep questioning,
Sara

Edit 7/31 - I need to catalogue/better organize this list… hang tight!

1000 reblogs = $10
10000 reblogs = $100 .. and so on
Okay, we know, we know, it’s shameless self promotion. We will be using the increased traffic from our website to fund this donation. We will be sending Red Cross the check for the Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami.
UPDATE: We forgot to add what we’d do if someone were to “like” the post. We will combine the reblogs and likes we got from our last post along with the reblogs and likes we get from this post.
We wish we can donate more, but it’s all we can handle. If you would like to donate directly to the cause, please click here.
We will be donating 1 cent per every reblog, 1 cent for every like and 5 cents per every new follower we get. We’ll be sending the check to American Red Cross.
Email us at what@viaSQUARED.com for any questions regarding this.
EDIT! Hopefully this will get enough notes, but if it gets too many, we’d have to stop it at 50000!

cypto:

National Geographic Magazine released a video clip, showing the most “typical” human face on the planet as part of its series on the human race called “Population 7 billion.”

This is a really great video. Over the past year or so, I’ve really fallen in love with environmental science and sustainability, and this is the type of content I’d love to create for educators — both in the classroom and out — and their students. I think the younger generation really connects with images and videos more than text and lectures. It’s innovation like this — putting important content into a fresh video — that makes students WANT to learn more! This is where it’s at!

TEAGUE Give Water (by TEAGUE)

The interaction design team at Teague decided to make a device that allowed us to take a water measurement at the point of use. Working with an in-house physical prototyper, the team built a Wi-Fi connected water meter and attached it to the faucet in our studio kitchen.

Teague is kicking off a 3 month campaign to raise $10,000 for water projects through charity: water.

As I trek further into the semester, I’m finding that I’m really interested in the global water crisis. I just want to take a moment to file a disclaimer: a lot of my posts this semester will probably be related to water!

I’m adding the finishing touches to a case study on malaria & hydropower in Africa, and once I’m finished, it’ll be added to the Earth & Space QUEST database for your perusing pleasure :)

RAISE AWARENESS
What you see up top is a Cove in Taiji, Japan. This cove is covered in blood for most of the year. Where is the blood from? Dolphins.
The Cove [a movie] exposes the slaughter of more than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises off the coast of Japan every year, and how their meat, containing toxic levels of mercury, is sold as food in Japan and other parts of Asia, often labeled as whale meat. The majority of the world is not aware this is happening.
Out of the 20,000 only a handful is auctioned off to marine aquariums for shows and entertainment. As for the rest, they are slaughtered and killed in inhumane ways, for no reason. The people in japan barely even know this is happening, or the fact that they are being killed slowly with their mercury intake that their government lies about.
Spread the word of awareness. Dolphins are up there with people, they need to be protected. Help spread awareness to end this horrible act. For more information you can visit the official site, or watch the movie on netflix or through other sources.

Wow… please help spread awareness. This is definitely fodder for my Water: Science & Society class!
